We are saddened to announce the passing on May 13, 2013 of Dr. Andrzej Korbonski, a distinguished Polish-American scholar, Professor Emeritus in the UCLA Department of Political Science, Editor of the journal Communist and Post-Communist Studies, and former Director of the UCLA Center for Russian and East European Studies (now the Center for European and Eurasian Studies).

Professor Korbonski was born and raised in Poland. During the Second World War he joined the Polish underground army to fight against Nazi Germany and spent a year in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. After the war he received his BS degree in economics from the University of London and his PhD in public law and government from Columbia University. His numerous publications include Politics of Socialist Agriculture in Poland: 1945-1960 (1965), The Warsaw Pact (1969), The Church and State in Poland after WWII (1994) and Poland Ten Years After (2000).
