Thomas Newhall's research focuses on the development of Buddhist monasticism and monastic law in East Asia. In 2025, he completed his PhD in the department of Asian Languages and Cultures under the supervision of Professor Robert Buswell with a thesis entitled "Creating a Form-of-Life: Studies of the Vinaya School and its Impact on Buddhism and Society in East Asia." Prior to coming to UCLA, Tom completed degrees at the University of Tokyo, Foguang University (Taiwan), and Oberlin College (Ohio). He currently works as a lecturer at the University of Tokyo in the Department of Indian Philosophy and Buddhist Studies.
