Six undergraduates receive NSEP awards to study through the UC Education Abroad Program in Chile, China, Egypt, Japan, and Korea during 2002-03.
The Education Abroad Program (EAP) at UCLA is pleased to announce its recipients of National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren undergraduate scholarships to study abroad in 2002-03.
Following a highly selective competition, the Institute for International Education approved awards to eight UCLA students. Six of these students will study abroad through EAP, the official UC study abroad program:
Olivia Calderon, Egypt/Year
Daniel Chu, Korea/Fall
Jessica Enman, Chile/Fall
Khadijah Haseeba Addy, Egypt/Year
Benjamin Kong, China/Year
Luke Murry, Japan/Year
These students will be honored at an NSEP Award Convocation on June 14, 2002, in San Francisco. Of the three UCLA alternates announced, Natasha Behbahany (Egypt/Year) and Robert Liddicoat (China/Summer) are EAP students.
NSEP Boren scholarships provide support to US undergraduates to pursue the study of languages and cultures in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation. NSEP scholarships can be applied to study abroad in all countries, except Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Awards range from full scholarships (covering tuition and other program costs, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and local transportation) to minimum awards of $2,500 for summer, $4,000 for a semester or $6,000 for an academic year.
The deadline for UCLA students to apply for NSEP scholarships for 2003-04 study abroad will be announced in the coming months. Campus deadlines are usually in December or January.
NSEP was established by the National Security Education Act of 1991 to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships and grants. The National Security Education Act of 1991 was authored by, Senator David L. Boren from Oklahoma. A strong supporter of international education, Senator Boren is now President of The University of Oklahoma.
