Program Overview
1. Research Grants
Scholars at academic institutions are eligible to apply for research grants. Researchers focusing on the social, cultural, economic or political development of Taiwan over the past few decades are especially encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to collaborative projects with scholars in Taiwan. Research grants are usually given for no more than two years.
Stipend
The budget for research grants does not include salary for the researcher except for summer salary calculated at 1/9 of the scholar's annual salary plus fringe. An average research grant might also include costs for research assistants, living costs, and travel expenses, etc. To assist you with your research budget, you may wish to use the following guidelines for living costs abroad:
First month $120 a day
Thereafter $60 a day
Round trip costs from the East coast to East Asia are approximately
$1,500.
Criteria
a. The long-term impact of the proposed project;
b. The importance of the proposed project in its field;
c. Originality and feasibility;
d. Collaboration with other scholars.
One research grant in honor of the late Congressman Walter Judd will
be awarded each year. The amount of this grant is $15,000.

2. Scholar Grants
(Application deadline: October 15)
a. CCK Distinguished Fellowships:
No more than two grants each year will be awarded to distinguished full professors. Each grant provides up to $50,000 to help replace half of the salary of faculty on sabbatical, or for time off for research and writing. If grants from other sources are also awarded to the applicant, the Foundation's grant, when added to the others, should not exceed the recipient's annual salary. Applications should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the chairman of the department, the dean of the college, or the provost of the university.
b. CCK Scholar Grants:
Tenured faculty, including full professors and associate professors, may apply for CCK Scholar Grant of up to $40,000 and $35,000, respectively, to help replace half of the salary of faculty on sabbatical, or for time off for research and writing. If grants from other sources are also awarded to the applicant, the Foundation's grant, when added to the others, should not exceed the recipient's annual salary. Applications should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the chairman of the department, from the dean of the college or the provost of the university.
c. CCK Junior Scholar Grants:
The Foundation provides postdoctoral scholars and assistant professors without tenure who have taught for no more than 6 years since receiving their Ph.D. degree with grants for time off for research and writing. Applications should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the chairman of their department. These grants will be for one year, and the maximum amount of each award is $30,000.
Important Information
The Foundation's grants provide support for research on Chinese
Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
Funding is not provided for capital equipment (including computers and printers), building design, construction, or maintenance.
Funding is not available for university administrative costs including overhead, or endowments.
The Foundation does not fund library acquisitions.
An applicant who already has a two-year research grant is not eligible to apply for a CCK Grant for Scholars that would run concurrently with the research grant. The research grant must end before an applicant can apply for a CCK Grant for Scholars.

- All applications must include the following items, in the order listed below:
a.A one-page summary of the proposed project;
b.A detailed itemized budget (If this sum is to be supplemented by
matching funds, please include this information in the budget);
c.A description of the proposed project of no more than 6 pages in
length.
- All applications should also include curriculum vitae of the project director and any co-directors, as well as lists of publications over the last five years related to the proposed project, and any relevant supporting materials.
- Twelve copies of each application are required.
- For most applicants, the application process begins on June 1 and ends on October 15 when applications must be received by the Foundation's McLean office. Applications received by the Foundation after the - published deadlines will not be considered. The final results for most applications will be announced in May of the following year. Grants for publications and conferences submitted by September 15 will be announced in January.
Do not send applications by fax or e-mail.
- The Foundation will initially direct all messages and correspondence about the applications to respective project directors. If a grant is approved, the CCK Foundation, in most cases, will then correspond with the university's grant administrator to arrange payments over the period of the grant.
- The Foundation does not provide a written critique for those applicants who do not receive grants.
- The Foundation's grant programs are subject to changes annually. Please contact the Foundation for up-to-date information.
- The Foundation's application form requests all applicants to indicate the field of specialization for their projects. If the project is multidisciplinary, please specify.
