Global Scholars Program

Intro to the Global Scholars Program

The International Institute is collaborating with UCLA Departments and Schools to offer generous stipends for the first two years to incoming doctoral students of exceptional promise who propose to work on issues of interest to the International Institute.  The appointment as a Global Scholar carries with it important intellectual and mentoring benefits.  The Global Scholars are fully integrated into the ongoing activities of the Global Fellows Program, which stimulates interdisciplinary community and mutual mentoring by (a) some of the UCLA's most accomplished and renowned faculty in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences (the Senior Fellows); (b) a superb group of early-career postdoctoral scholars from around the world (the Global Fellows); and (c) a very small number of dissertation-writing UCLA Ph.D. candidates (the Associate Fellows).

As a condition of the appointment, Global Scholars are required to attend, in the first and/or second year at UCLA, occasional (2 or 3) workshops on issues pertaining to culture and society, markets, and governance and conflict around the world.  The workshops are intended to further interdisciplinary community among the Global Scholars by giving them an overview of the scholarship of global issues in disciplines other than their own.
