Rahul Acharya is an acclaimed exponent of Odissi, a classical dance from eastern
India, known equally for its rigor and lyricism. Internationally recognized for his
talent and virtuosity, Rahul has performed as a soloist around the globe, appearing
on prominent stages in India, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. In 2014, the
New York Times wrote that “Mr. Acharya’s control is amazing, and as he molded
himself with no sense of strain into some of the most acrobatic poses of the god
Shiva, he cast a spell.” In 2013, the same paper observed that “Mr. Acharya's refined
sculptural firmness, complex gestural eloquence, subtle musical phrasing and
articulate grace are enough to extend most ideas of masculinity...he connects virility
to virtuoso delicacy[.]”

Rahul received the 2013 Ram Gopal Award for Best Male Solo Dancer by attendance
– one of India’s premier dance journals. In 2009, Acharya became the first male
Odissi dancer honored by the Indian Government with the Ustad Bismillah Khan
Youth Award. Rahul is part of UNESCO's International Dance Council an an empanelled artist with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. His dance is deeply inspired by his teacher, Guru Shri Durga Charan Ranbir, and he works in the artistic lineage of Guru Deba Prasad Das, one of the architects of contemporary Odissi.
