In this lecture, Professor Youngmin Kim will speak about his winning design for an international competition for Gwanghwamun Square, a deeply symbolic and historical site in South Korea. The judging committee composed of many internationally renowned architects and landscape designers, including Dominique Perrault, Adriaan Gueze, and Hyosang Seung, unanimously chose Professor Kim’s work from a pool of 202 participants from seventeen different countries. His piece, titled “Deep Surface”, presents a new interpretation on ‘Korean’ landscape in order to bridge the gap created by the historic gravity of national symbolism and the dynamic force driving one of the most futuristic cities in the world. In this talk, Professor Kim will address the following questions: What is the philosophy behind of his design? What do people really want in this place? Can the design make changes in politics, society, and individual life of people?
