What were the most dramatic and important changes from the Koryŏ dynasty to the Chosŏn dynasty? There were numerous changes at that time period but, we need to take into consideration the incorporation of the Northeast area also known as the 'Hamgyŏng provinces(咸鏡道)'. The area had numerous features which were different when compared to other counties in the Chosŏn periods, a number of which were completely unique. Examples of this are the differences in the populace, tax systems, military issues, diplomatic troubles with the Ming dynasty in China and Jurchen tribes, and even in some cultural aspects. Until now, the Northeast area of the Chosŏn dynasty was simply known as the "barbaric and uncivilized" land which had been ruled over by Chosŏn dynasty- a perspective based off of the long standing desire for expansionism and the continued support of one sided nationalism. In this talk, Mr. Yongcheol Cho will explore how gaining a clearer understanding of the Northeast society of the Chosŏn dynasty would have led to a deeper understanding of the characteristics of the Chosŏn, bringing to the forefront more varied perspectives of this pre-modern society.
