Wednesday, May 27, 2020
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The emergence of new technologies bring new opportunities for the industry and improve our quality of life. Therefore, people want to ensure that innovative, emerging technology is used in an appropriate way that abides to our desired direction. Technology Assessment (TA) serves to identify the effect of technology on the development of a society, economy, and culture in advance. Additionally, TA serves as a bridge between both science and technology, and society and policy.

In Korea, TA became mandatory due to the enactment of "Framework Act on Science and Technology" in 2001 and has been performed since 2003. Since then, a total of 20 TAs were successfully completed on an array of topics such as; Big Data, Genome Editing, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and more. In this colloquium, Dr. Choi will introduce the importance of governance of new technologies and discuss the TA experiences in South Korea and the United States.
