Speech Skills We Need in the ‘Age of Untact'

In the age of "untact" following the COVID-19 outbreak, people are forced to read the minds of individuals on the other side of the screen and react to their unresponsiveness in lack of the nonlinguistic elements. The term "untact" is used in South Korea to refer to the efforts in limiting contact with other people due to COVID-19.

While the core of speech is the intention of communicating with others, speech also contains numerous nonverbal, nonlinguistic elements which are not necessarily associated with the contents the one intends to convey. Euphonious voice, vocal control, appropriate facial expressions and hand gestures, and even sound of breath can draw and capture audience’s attention, and make the speech more effective and persuasive. Not everyone has to be a wordsmith, but it is imperative to learn and develop good speech skills.

In this lecture, Ms.Kim will discuss the basic elements of persuasive speech and skills required in the new era of untact.
