The discovery of anesthetics and advances in anesthesiology played a crucial role in the development of surgery. Before anesthesia was discovered, the operating room was a space full of pain, screams, and bleeding. After anesthesia began to be used, surgery developed to be more accurate and safe. Patients were also able to escape the fear and pain of surgery.

Modern anesthesia is divided into general anesthesia and regional anesthesia. For general anesthesia, inhalation anesthetics, intravenous anesthetics, pain relievers, and muscle relaxants are required. Also, local anesthetics are used for regional anesthesia, Currently, various anesthetic drugs are being used, and efforts to develop safer drugs are continuing.

The development of anesthetics has freed mankind from the fear of pain, but has brought about the side effects of abuse. Propofol, the most common intravenous anesthetic currently used in the operating room, is a social issue due to celebrity misuse. Illegal distribution of ketamine has been misused as a dating rape drug, causing serious social problems. In this talk, Dr. Lee will address many of these issues and discuss their ramifications.
