Asian art has long reflected the political and social situation of its respective country. The literary paintings of scholars are no exception to this. Examples of this being the translation of "Western art" methods and principles including oil paintings and the use of perspective after their arrival to the Eastern world through Japan, or how the aftermath of the Chinese Cultural Revolution changed the lives of artists at the time, which subsequently changed the art they made.
Contemporary art is often considered difficult and complex. However, we come into contact with contemporary art on many occasions such as luxury brands, movies, dramas, and our regular lives. Why did Louis Vuitton collaborate with the Japanese painter Yayoi Kusama? What do Asian arts after the COVID-19 pandemic desire to tell us? How were artworks within the Korean movie “Parasite” considered ‘symbolic and opportune’? Dr. Keunyoung Kwon, who has been reporting on the vivid landscape of Asian art, will present the moments when art became news, and when art answered the questions that pertain to our everyday lives.

*Event is exclusive to CKS Visiting Scholars, graduate/undergraduate students, and faculty
