AIDS has affected the world in profound ways. According to a UNAIDS report, “To date around 65 million people have been infected with HIV and AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981.” The report went on to say that in 2005, three regions led the toll in global deaths due to AIDS: Latin America (59,000), Asia (200,000), and Sub-Saharan Africa (2 million).
On May 7th, UCLA’s International Institute will be addressing this issue with updates in various regions. They will also use the occasion to discuss how creativity plays a role in global HIV education/prevention and how art is used to communicate response to AIDS. The afternoon will focus on Latin American, Asia (specifically South Asia and Southeast Asia), and Africa. The updates will have a unique perspective as it discusses bridging art, activism, and science across regions.
The closing speaker will be actress Gloria Reuben, who starred in the ground-breaking role of HIV-positive nurse Jeanie Boulet on ER. She will discuss her work as artist and activist.
