Natan Sharansky is currently a member of the Israeli Parliament (KNESSET).  He is also a foremost Soviet dissident and spokesman for the Soviet Jewry movement.  He was arrested in 1977 for treason and was sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment.  During his years of imprisonment, he became a symbol for human rights in general and Soviet Jewry in particular.  Once freed, he has continued to labor on behalf of other dissidents with particular attention paid to issues confronting Soviet immigrants. 

This program is part of UCLA's ongoing commitment to providing a forum for the wide range of views on key international issues for the campus community and beyond.
