Applying to the IDS Major
International Development Application Information
Published: Tuesday, April 20, 2010
UCLA students who are planning to pursue the International Development Studies (IDS) major should apply for the major. Applications are ONLY accepted during the FALL. The application period is the END of the Fall Quarter. By the end of that term, students should have done the following:
- completed all preparation courses by the end of the Fall Quarter of their Junior Year (3rd year) with a minimum UC GPA in these courses of 2.00
- completed at least level 3 of a foreing language (equivalent to three quarters at UCLA)
- submitted an application during Fall 2013.
Please keep in mind that meeting the minimum preparation requirements does not guarantee admission to the IDS major. Students should have a backup major in mind when applying, just in case they are not accepted to the IDS major. We have a limited number of spaces allocated for new admits, therefore the application process is very selective. Two main factors are considered when admitting students. One of them is preparatory UC GPA. The second factor is whether or not the student is a good fit for the major based on the response to the short question “Why do you want to major in IDS”.
The average prep GPA in the 2012-2013 period was 3.1, however, having a high GPA does not guarantee acceptance to the major, as the essay question is also considered. Possible back up majors to consider are: International Area Studies (African & Middle Eastern Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, Asian Studies), Anthropology, History, Geography, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, Afro-American Studies.
Incoming UCLA Students: Incoming freshmen and transfer students may come to UCLA as Pre-International Development Studies majors, however, please note that that designation has no bearing on being accepted to the International Development Studies major, as they will still need to apply for it. Incoming students should have a back-up major, in case they are not accepted into the IDS major. Also, transfer students interested in pursuing the Pre-International Development Studies major should have completed as many preparation courses prior to coming to UCLA as possible.
The 2013-2014 application for the International Development Studies major will be available during the 2013 Fall Quarter. Please check back at the beginning of 2013 Fall Quarter for the specific dates.
Note: If you have completed any preparation coursework outside of UCLA prior to the application period, please ensure that this coursework posts to your DPR. Please contact the UCLA Admissions Office if any non-UCLA coursework is still pending.
If you would like to verify that the courses you have taken are applying towards the preparation requirements correctly, please feel free to have your DPR modeled for the International Development Studies major at your College Counseling Unit.
Applicants will be notified of their application status via e-mail within the first three weeks of 2014 Winter Quarter. Please refrain from inquiring about your application status until then.
The online application will include the following short essay question: Why are you interested in pursuing the IDS major? Your answer will allow the committee learn about your background and whether or not you are a good fit for the program.
The application will be available during the 2013 Fall Quarter.
Please feel free to contact our office at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any inquires about this application.
