Program Summary

Fellowships for doctoral students and recent PhD holders to pursue their own research at the Australian National University.
Fellowships may be from three months to one year, depending on needs of the recipient.
The number of fellowships each year will vary depending on quality of applicants and funding. On average, the program expects to have two doctoral fellows and two postdoctoral fellows each year.

Eligibility

Doctoral fellows will be graduate students in US universities who have completed all phases of their study except the dissertation, are highly recommended, have well-developed dissertation projects, and make a strong case for why a fellowship will benefit their dissertation work. For doctoral fellows needing advice on their dissertations, some consideration will be given to having an appropriate advisor while at the ANU.

Postdoctoral fellows will be US-based scholars who have finished their PhD degree within the last five years, are highly recommended, have a clearly defined project to do while at the ANU that has promise of leading to one or more significant publications. Preference will be given to post-doctoral fellowship applicants who are not based at US universities with major centers for the study of Southeast Asia (This preference will not be used, however, when considering a postdoctoral applicant who is still, temporarily, at the university from which the PhD degree has been or is about to be received.).

For both doctoral and postdoctoral fellowship, the research should hold high promise of contributing sound scholarship to Southeast Asian studies and helping the recipients sustain and develop their research interests and skills in this field of study in the United States.

Applicants for Postdoctoral Fellowships should include a writing sample; it is optional for Doctoral applicants to do so.

Applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships must include, from the Chair of the dissertation committee, a clear indication of when they will be finished.

Fellowships are open to all disciplinary fields, all countries of the region, and a wide range of research topics.

Stipend

The doctoral fellowship award includes a grant of up to $A1,500 per month, one round-trip economy class air fare (usually between west coast USA and Australia), and some funding for research (up to $A2,000 for a full year fellowship; up to $A1,000 for a three month one).

The postdoctoral fellowship includes a stipend of up to $A4,000 per month, one round-trip economy class air fare (usually between west coast USA and Australia), and some funding for research (up to $A3,000 for a full year fellowship; up to $A1,000 for a three month one).

Fellows in each category who are accompanied by their family and stay six months or more at the ANU will be entitled to some family support as well, up to $A5,000 depending on number of family members and other circumstances.
