Japan Program: Advanced Research Grants

The Grants for Advanced Research on Japan competition is designed to encourage innovative research that is comparative and contemporary in nature, and has long-term applied policy implications, or that engages Japan in wider regional and global debates. Funds for this program are provided to the Council by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission.
Scholars who hold the Ph.D. or its equivalent and are United States citizens or have been resident in the United States for at least three consecutive years at the time of application.
Grant awards are provided for individual research that may be carried out in Japan, the United States, and/or other countries. Support is available for periods of 2 to 12 months and will not exceed $25,000. All awards are contingent upon availability of funds.
December 1, 2001 - Application receipt deadline.

1. Completed and signed "Grants for Advanced Research on Japan" application and budget forms.
2. Supplementary Statements A-E. (All statements must be typed on single-sided paper. Indicate your name and the page number at the top of each supplementary page.)
A. A curriculum vitae
B. A research proposal of no more than 2,500 words, which includes the information available at http://www.ssrc.org/fellowships
D. List of sources and amounts of all previous support received for work related to this project E. A list of countries outside the United States where you have conducted research
3. Three completed and signed reference forms (enclosed) sent directly to the Council at the address below.
