John N. Hawkins, UCLA professor of education, has been appointed director of the Center for International and Development Education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA.
The Center for International and Development Education (CIDE), created in April 2002, houses research projects related to the broad issues of education and development. Composed of faculty, staff, current students and graduates, the center provides a learning community combining the study of theory with practical management of educational programs.
"Professor Hawkins brings experience, knowledge, commitment and leadership qualities to CIDE," said Aimee Dorr, dean of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.
"I am deeply honored that I have been chosen for this exciting position," Hawkins said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues in guiding the center to make important contributions within the university and to society at large."
Hawkins' primary areas of interest are in education and development in the Asian region, higher education reform, politics of educational planning and practice, and education and intergroup relations. He served as dean of International Studies and Overseas Programs at UCLA from 1988 to 1999.
Currently the center is developing a project to map higher education reform internationally.
The center is also teaming with the University of California Office of the President's Office of International Academic Activities and Education Abroad Program on a project focusing on dynamics of change and strategic directions in global higher education.
Additional projects focus on educational reconstruction in Afghanistan, higher education reform in Japan and China, and university reform in Azerbaijan.
The Center for International and Development Education is a partner of the California-based nongovernmental organization Relief International and is the home of the Comparative Education Review, published by the University of Chicago Press, and edited by Hawkins.
