California State Polytechnic University, Pomona - Professor of East Asian History

DEPARTMENT: History Department seeks an Assistant Professor in East Asian History. The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly work, and service to the department, university, and the community. The successful applicant will demonstrate commitment to students and campus-wide initiatives such as learning centeredness, service learning, obtaining external funding to support teaching and scholarship, international education, and graduate education.

POSITION TITLE AND DESCRIPTION: Tenure-track position in East Asian history with preferences for Chinese history and for a broad perspective in world history.  Starting date for this position is September 2006.  Primary responsibilities will involve:  (1) The teaching of courses in undergraduate and graduate-level Chinese history and world history; ability to offer a course on Southeast Asian history preferred; (2) student advising; (3) engagement in scholarly activities, including but not limited to research and publication, fellowship and grant programs, teacher-training seminars and other programs, or work with museums or community organizations; and (4) participation in committee work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. in East Asian history, or Ph.D. in history with an emphasis on East Asia, or an equivalent doctorate by July 1, 2006.  Some teaching experience at the college level required.  Experience and demonstrated skill in the organization and presentation of topical and survey courses for undergraduate and graduate students preferred. Evidence of scholarly promise required.

Note:  If a candidate has ABD status, Registrar’s verification is required if status is not indicated on official transcripts.  Initial review of applications will begin November 1, 2005 and will continue until the position is filled.  Materials submitted by the candidate will be available for examination by all tenured and tenure-track faculty of the department.
