Hien Thi Nguyen will join CSEAS as a post-doctoral fellow in the fall of AY 2003-04 upon finishing her dissertation at Indiana University. Nguyen is teaching "Society and Culture in Contemporary Vietnam" in SSEALC for Spring 2004.
Her current research focuses on the performing arts of Vietnamese spirit possession, which she will expand while resident at UCLA to include specifically women's perspectives on popular Vietnamese religion and spirit possession. If possible, she plans to conduct fieldwork on the folk practices of Vietnamese in the United States. For one quarter during her tenure as a post-doctoral fellow, Nguyen will teach either an introductory course in English on Vietnamese religion, or an advanced course in conjunction with the language department on Vietnamese culture, taught in Vietnamese. Nguyen will also organize an international conference Vietnamese religious sects, folk practices, rituals and divination.
