Renowned Indonesian dancer teaches Surakarta Court Dance at UCLA in Spring 2007.
Published: Friday, June 22, 2007Eko Supriyanto was a Lecturer in UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures in Spring 2007, teaching a course on Surakarta Court Dance from Indonesia. He is a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (STSI) in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, where he is a faculty member. In 2000 he completed his Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures. In the U.S., he was a dance consultant for Julie Taymor's "The Lion King" Disney production at the Pantages Theatre, Hollywood, and danced with Madonna on her "Drowned World" Tour in Europe and USA. Since return to Indonesia January 2002, he has been choreographing and performing his own solo works as well as working with his dance group 'Solo Dance Studio' at Teater Utan Kayu, Eko Studio. He starred in the film "Opera Jawa" (2006).
