A Year In Review

In reviewing the highlights from this past year we are proud of a number of events and programs. In conjunction with our Senior Fellow Gen. Wesley K. Clark (Ret.) we launched a major conference, featuring Gov. Bill Richardson, on U.S. foreign policy toward so-called rogue states. We also hosted a number of terrific thinkers and policymakers.

US Ambassador to the UN Zalmay Khalilzad gave our annual Bernard Brodie Lecture. Columnist David Brooks of the New York Times gave the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture, which we hosted in conjunction with the Pearl Foundation and UCLA Hillel. Former Foreign Minister of Thailand and Burkle Center Senior Fellow Kantathi Suphamongkhon gave the Arnold Harberger Lecture. We also hosted talks by former chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, former Pentagon official Larry Korb, UNF Senior Advisor Gillian Sorenson, UC Irvine professor Deborah Avant, and many others. To engage students in international affairs we launched the Burkle Center Internship Program, and we continued to provide scholarships and research grants to students and faculty. Four outstanding graduate students received a Belkin Memorial Fellowship, and two teams of UCLA faculty received research grants for next year. We thank the UCLA community for its support in making this a great year.
