The Origins of the Buddha Image -- Revisited

The Origins of the Buddha Image -- Revisited

Preoccupied with how the transition from non-figural to anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha was effected, scholars over the last hundred years have argued for a Greek, Indian, or Iranian origin of the Buddha image. This lecture revisits the most cogent arguments in light of recent discoveries and presents new research on the relevant historical circumstances during the first century CE.
