Glimpses of Contemporary Qinghai: Buddhism, Medicine, & Village Development

A talk by Kunchok Gyaltsen (Executive Director, Kumbum Hospital of Tibetan Medicine)

Dr. Gyaltsen will speak about the relationship between Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine and the relationship of both to his work in promoting village development in Tibetan communities in Qinghai, western China.

Kunchok Gyaltsen took his monastic vows at Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai, China, in 1981 at the age of 16. He studied Tibetan medicine under Tashi Rinpoche and Ngakwan Tenzin, and was recognized as a doctor of Tibetan medicine by the Kumbum Monastery in 1984, and by the Chinese government in 1992. Dr. Gyaltsen received an undergraduate degree in Buddhist and Sanskrit studies from the Chinese Higher Academy of Tibetan Buddhist Studies, in Beijing. He has also studied at the School of International Training (in Brattleboro, VT), where he received a master’s degree in international and intercultural management, and at the ASEAN Institute for Health Development at Mahidol University, Thailand, where he recevied the master’s degree in primary healthcare management. Dr. Gyaltsen is executive director of the Kumbum Tibetan Medical Hospital and China director of the Tibetan Healing Fund, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that provides primary healthcare and basic education for rural Tibetan children and their families.
