Juhyung Rhi has written extensively on the diverse aspects of Gandharan art. He earned his doctorate at UC Berkeley with a dissertation entitled "Gandharan Reliefs of the ‘Sravasti Miracle’: An Iconographic Reassessment."  Professor Rhi's publications include:

  • “Bodhisattvas in Gandharan Art: an Aspect of Mahayana in Gandharan Buddhism,” forthcoming in Sources of Gandharan Buddhism: Text, Archaeology and Art. 
  • “Indo ch’ogi pulgyo misul ui pulsang kwan (The concept and functions of Buddha images in early Indian Buddhist Art), Misulsahak 14, 2001. 
  • “From Bodhisattva to Buddha: the Beginning of Iconic Representation in Buddhist Art,” Artibus Asiae, 54-3/4:207-25, 1994.

His book Gandharan Art was published in Korean this year by Sakjyejul. He is currently preparing an English version. Professor Rhi will illustrate his lecture with slides.
