Launched in September of 2007, the Burkle Center Internship Program offers UCLA students direct exposure to international relations and related disciplines. From major events and conferences to research initiatives to student-oriented outreach programs, the Burkle Center offers a variety of venues for interested and engaged students to get involved. The Program is designed to offer students experience, exposure, and networking opportunities. In return, interns help the Center connect with student groups and interests at UCLA. The Center also hosts bi-annual internal gatherings to facilitate a community among the Center's staff, fellows and student affiliates.
Internships are open to current UCLA undergraduate, graduate and law students and are offered for the Fall/Winter and Winter/Spring quarters. Preference is given to graduating seniors, but the Center has hosted sophomores and juniors in the past. There are presently no internships offered during the summer session.
Applications for the winter/spring 2009-10 Internship will be due on Monday, November 30, 2009, at 5:00 PM. To apply, please send the following information as a single word or PDF document to: adillard@international.ucla.edu
*Internships are competitive and selections are made after an interview (by invitation only) with the Deputy Director, Alexandra Lieben.
Interns are required to work a minimum of 6 hours per week. Hours are flexible and structured around academic commitments, usually students work 3 hours at the office and 3 hours at home. Interns are expected to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance.
Each Intern is assigned a long-term project for the duration of their internship. Projects are assigned in consultation with each intern but the final determination is made based on the needs of the Center. Long-term assignments are meant to ensure that interns are developing vital professional skills. Interns are also expected to assist with short-term tasks and other daily needs of the Center. Interns are encouraged to attend Burkle Center events offering them important opportunities to network in the field.
Students in the Winter/Spring program are typically paired with a partner in the preceding class who worked on similar assignments. At the beginning of each term, partners will meet with the Deputy Director and Program Manager to discuss logistics for the internship and the nature of the assignment in detail. Partners work with each other and individually as needed throughout the term of the internship.
