Close to 300 faculty and graduate students from universities worldwide will gather for three days at the UCLA School of Law for the 29th annual conference of the Association for Israel Studies (AIS) conference.
In 80 panels, roundtable and plenary sessions, the scholars will address an array of topics in history, politics, law, economics, international relations, literature and art under the conference theme: “Israel in the International Arena: Scholarship, Imagery, Discourse and Public Policy.” The conference will also examine the state of Israel studies, both within Israel and internationally, and its impact on the discourse about Israel in universities and schools.
Although intended primarily for an academic audience, the full conference, as well as the keynote address and the third plenary on the topic of Israel education, are open to the public.
Former Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben Ami, professor emeritus of Tel Aviv University and vice president of the Toledo International Center for Peace in Madrid, and will deliver the conference’s keynote address, “Zionism, Israel and ‘The World,’” at the opening plenary session on Monday, June 24 at 6 p.m. Dr. Ben-Ami is renowned for his efforts in the Middle East peace process, particularly at the Camp David and Taba negotiations of 2000 and 2001.
The third plenary session—“Israel Education and Scholarship: The Academy and the Community”— will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 12:30 pm in Room 147 of Dodd Hall at UCLA. At this session, which is open to the public, leading university and community educators will discuss some of the difficult issues surrounding teaching about Israel.
Speakers will include UCLA professor and Director of the Nazarian Center Arieh Saposnik, Dean of the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, UCLA Professor of History David Myers, and Distinguished UCLA Professor Emeritus of Law and Acting UCLA Chancellor Emeritus Norman Abrams, along with many UCLA graduate students.
Noted scholars from Israel's many universities and colleges will present at the conference, as well scholars from the US, Canada, England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, and China.
