Megan Rancier was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania and earned a B.Mus. in music history at Bucknell University before coming to UCLA for graduate studies. As part of her doctoral program, she spent seventeen months in Almaty, Kazakhstan carrying out fieldwork on the Kazakh fiddle qyl-qobyz and its cultural legacy, for which she received a Fulbright IIE Fellowship and a Title VIII Research Fellowship. In 2009, she graduated with a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology with a focus on Central Asian music and national identity.
