INTERACTIVE APPLICATION WEBSITE NOW ONLINE

The Center for Near Eastern Studies administers the federally-funded Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program for the Middle East at UCLA, which supports graduate training in Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish and related area studies.

The purpose of the FLAS Fellowship program is to enrich the nation's pool of area and international specialists. Applicants must provide reasonable assurance that they plan to pursue a career in teaching or other public service upon completion of their training.

New and continuing UCLA graduate students in all disciplines may apply for the Academic Year and/or the Summer FLAS awards. The AY FLAS Fellowship provides a stipend of $15,000, and tuition and fees up to $12,000. Awardees must take a full course load (a minimum of 12 units) each term, including Middle East area studies and a language course, and take all courses for a letter grade.

The Summer FLAS Fellowship supports intensive summer language study in approved programs in the US and abroad. Such programs should be a minimum of six weeks long and offer a minimum of 140 contact hours for beginning- and intermediate-level students, or 120 contact hours for advanced-level students. FLAS funds may not be used for a first-year course overseas, unless such a course is not available in the United States.

Summer FLAS grants provide a stipend of $2,500, and up to $4,000 for tuition and fees. Students applying for a summer grant should describe their study plans in detail, specifying the educational institution, the name of the course, the start and end dates of the course, the number of contact hours, and the cost of tuition and fees.

The FLAS application form is online at http://apply.international.ucla.edu/?cnes. Applicants first set up an ID profile, and then apply separately for the summer and/or the academic year fellowship(s).
