FULBRIGHT-HAYS DISSERTATION RESEARCH ABROAD PROGRAM
Deadline: Early October 2009
Approximately 100 fellowships for dissertation research abroad in the fields of modern languages and area studies.
Support is provided for 6 to 12 months abroad with awards of up to $60,000 for travel, living and research expenses.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, planning a teaching career at the college level, have language skills necessary to carry out research and be advanced to candidacy at the time of tenure.

FULBRIGHT IIE GRADUATE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
Deadline: September 11, 2009
1500 fellowships for graduate study and/or independent research abroad in more than 140 countries.
Support: The fellowship provides round-trip airfare, living stipend, insurance and book allowances. Award amounts vary by country and are for one academic year (as defined by the host country).
Eligibility: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, hold a BS/BA by the time of departure, and be proficient in the language of the host country.
Deadline: Application materials will be available in May for the 2010-2011 award period. The campus deadline to submit all application materials is September 11, 2009.

JEANNE MRAD GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD TO MESA

The American Institute of Maghrib Studies (AIMS) invites US graduate students to apply for a travel grant to attend the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association of North America, to be held in Boston in November 2009.
In honor of her many years of service to AIMS and her sustained encouragement of American graduate students through her work at CEMAT, the AIMS Graduate Student Travel Awards are known as the Jeanne Mrad Graduate Student Travel Awards.
Students must have been successfully accepted to give a paper at the MESA. Paper themes must concern North African studies and all disciplines are welcome. Please note the MESA deadline for submissions is February 16, 2009.
Applicants must be members of the AIMS Graduate Student Association.
Applicants must be members of AIMS at the time of submission.

AIMS offers awards between $300 to $500 to support the cost of domestic travel, per diem, and MESA fees.

I. WILLIAM ZARTMAN NORTH AFRICAN TRAVEL AWARD TO MESA

The American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) invites North African scholars who have been selected to present a paper at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association of North America to apply for a travel award and stipend to the conference.
In honor of the many years of his service to the Institute and his affection for the scholars of the Maghrib, the award is named the I. William Zartman Award.
The award is intended for North African scholars living in North Africa. Scholars must be citizens of Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, or Libya. If selected, scholars will receive an award to cover up to $1500 in airfare, per diem for the duration of the conference, and MESA conference fees. Please note that the MESA deadline for submissions is February 16, 2009.

DONNA LEE BOWEN GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD TO THE AIMS ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) invites US graduate students to apply for a travel grant to attend the annual AIMS conference in North Africa.
In honor of her many years of service and her sustained encouragement of American graduate students through her work with AIMS, the Graduate Student Travel Award is known as the Donna Lee Bowen Graduate Student Travel Award.
The 2009 conference is titled Sahara Crossroads: Views from the North, and and will be held in Tangier, Morocco, June 6-8, 2009. Abstracts are due to wara@bu.edu by February 1, 2009.
Applicants must have been accepted to give a paper at the conference.

No more than one applicant will be selected as the holder of the Bowen Graduate Student Travel Award.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY POSTDOC IN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

Wesleyan University is pleased to announce a Mellon postdoctoral fellowship in Middle Eastern Studies for the academic year 2009-10, beginning July 1, 2009.
Wesleyan University welcomes applicants from any academic discipline. The fellow will teach a general introduction to the contemporary Middle East, grounded in his/her academic discipline, in the fall term, and an upper-level course of his/her design on some aspect of Middle Eastern Studies in the spring term. In addition, the fellow will consult with faculty, administrators, and students on developing a program of Middle Eastern Studies at Wesleyan.
The Mellon Fellowship offers a stipend of $45,000 for the year, plus benefits and some support for research.

INSTITUTE OF TURKISH STUDIES 2009-2010 GRANTS PROGRAM
Deadline: March 13, 2009
These grant opportunities are available only for United States citizens (or those who have acquired permanent resident status in the US) who are currently affiliated with a university in the U.S.
Research and Writing Grant: Turkey's Bid for EU Membership for scholars in the field of contemporary Turkish Studies. This is a single award in the amount of ten thousand dollars, to support research and/or writing for the 2009-2010 academic year with a particular weight assigned to work directed towards scholarly publication. This grant will be awarded to support research relating to the topic of Turkey's efforts to join the European Union.
Dissertation Writing Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or the humanities who have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. except their dissertation by June 1, 2009. These grants are for advanced students who have finished the research stage of their dissertation. Stipends range from $5,000 to $10,000.
Research Grants in Comparative Studies on Modern Turkey for graduate students at the dissertation research stage and for post-doctoral scholars who study aspects of the Republic of Turkey (post-1922) in a comparative context. A significant portion of the project should be devoted comparatively to one or more states or political entities in addition to the Turkish Republic. These grants are made primarily, but not exclusively, in the field of Political Science. The maximum award is $10,000.
Summer Language Study Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or humanities for summer travel to Turkey for language study in preparation for graduate research at an established Ottoman or Turkish language facility. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of two months in Turkey. Stipends generally range from $2,000 to $3,000.
Summer Research Grants for graduate students in the social sciences and humanities for summer travel to Turkey to carry out research projects. They are not intended for students who are currently engaged in dissertation writing. Normally, the recipients of Summer Research Grants are expected to spend a minimum of two months in Turkey. Stipends generally range from $2,000 to $4,000.
Postdoctoral Summer Travel Grants to scholars in the social sciences and humanities for travel to Turkey to carry out research projects. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of four weeks in Turkey. Maximum award is round-trip airfare to Turkey.

LADY DAVIS FELLOWSHIP TRUST AT THE TECHNION INSTITUTE

UCLA GRAD STUDENT FIELDWORK FELLOWSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Deadline: February 27, 2009
The UCLA International Institute announces a series of Fieldwork Fellowships open to UCLA doctoral students in good standing whose research focuses on one or more aspects of international or regional studies. The awards are targeted for research abroad and particularly for cases where other support is not available.
The fieldwork may be conducted either after the advancement to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree (i.e. long-term dissertation research), or before advancement to candidacy as a short-term pilot study. Candidates must, nonetheless, have completed all coursework for the Ph.D. degree.
Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply; there are no citizenship restrictions.
Long-term awards of six months to one year each (maximum award: $15,000) and short-term pilot awards of up to three months each (maximum award: $5,000) are available. Award amounts will vary, according to the project and proposed budget, with the precise award amounts to be determined by the Fellowship Selection Committee. Students who receive awards from other
sources that duplicate support of the Institute's Fieldwork Fellowship program will not be considered.
Applicants' dissertation or pilot study topics must have theoretical or comparative significance and normally will include one or more regional foci: Africa, Latin America, the Near East, Europe and Eurasia, and Asia. Students in the social sciences, humanities, and professional schools are
eligible to apply. The Fellowship Committee will give preference to contemporary, theoretical, or globalization topics consistent with the Institute's missions.

ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION SAWYER SEMINAR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, CHAPEL HILL
Deadline: February 23, 2009
One Postdoctoral Fellowship will be awarded in the 2009-2010 academic year for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar, “Diversity and Conformity in Muslim Societies: Historical Coexistence and Contemporary Struggles,” at UNC-Chapel Hill. This interdisciplinary seminar will examine the tensions between diversity and conformity, between tolerance and orthodoxy, in Muslim societies. Sawyer seminars include faculty and students from all of the Triangle Universities and other North Carolina schools, drawing from scholars who study history, geography, politics, music, art, architecture, religion, and law. The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the seminar, working closely with Sarah Shields (History) and Banu Gokariksel (Geography and International Studies) and two dissertation fellows to plan, organize, and participate in twice-monthly seminar meetings and three conferences during the academic year. The Fellow is not expected to teach any courses and will have an office at the Center for Global Initiatives in the FedEx Global Education Center.
The appointment will be from 1 August 2009 to 30 June 2010. Appointment is for full time employment. Salary is $45,000 and includes health insurance. Fellows will be responsible for relocation and housing expenses.
Eligibility: Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree no earlier than 2005. This degree could be from a Humanities or Social Science discipline or from an interdisciplinary program. Candidates who will have successfully defended their dissertations by May 1, 2009 will also be considered. There are no citizenship restrictions for applicants.

1) A two-page cover letter stating your interest in the Postdoctoral Fellowship. Provide details on (i) how your research would benefit from and contribute to the Sawyer Seminar; (ii) your related research and organizing experience; and (iii) your long-term goals.

BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADS

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including the Middle East.
Award Amounts: Maximum scholarship awards are $10,000 for a semester; $20,000 for a full academic year.
Length of Study: Boren Scholarships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion, and therefore study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study. Summer-only programs are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematic students. Applications for summer-only programs will be considered if the program is eight (8) weeks or more.
Eligibility: (1) A U.S. citizen at the time of application. (2) A high school graduate, or have earned a GED, and are matriculated in an undergraduate degree program in a U.S. post-secondary institution, including universities, colleges and community colleges accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. (3) Applying to engage in a study abroad experience in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that meets home institution standards. (4) Planning to use the scholarship for study abroad, and the study abroad program ends before you graduate. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.
Government Service: In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren Scholars must agree to the NSEP Service Requirement.
Commitment to Government Service: Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a desire to work in the federal government.
Preferences: Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.
Countries: Boren Scholars may study in Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, Yemen, and Syria, among others.

Citizenship: Open only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must enroll in a two-year full-time master's degree program at a U.S. graduate institution. In addition, applicants must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 or higher, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher must be maintained throughout participation in the program. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.
Stipend: Fellowship includes tuition and mandatory fees, living stipend, reimbursement for books, and one round-trip travel between home and school.

KATHRYN DAVIS FELLOWSHIPS FOR PEACE

Full scholarships for intensive language study at the Middlebury Summer Language Schools in Arabic, Hebrew, and other critical languages.
Middlebury College is pleased to announce The Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages. These 100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from Kathryn Davis to address today’s critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States.
100 Davis Fellowships are offered to cover the full cost of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Hebrew, and other critical languages at the Middlebury College Language Schools. Fellowship grants cover the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools, plus a stipend to assist in defraying program-related expenses.
The Davis Fellowships are merit based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies, international politics and economics, peace and security studies, and/or conflict resolution.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation East-Central European Research Fellows Program: Up to four 3-month fellowships for Ph.D. scholars pursuing research in any field of the humanities or social sciences that relates to the Near East. The award is for $11,500.
Jennifer C. Groot Fellowship: Two or more awards of $1,800 each for archaeological fieldwork.
Harrell Family Fellowship and Kenneth W. Russell Fellowship: Each Fellowship provides one award of $1,200 for participation in an ACOR- supported archaeological project.
Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship: One or two awards for 1 or 2 months of residency at ACOR. Monthly stipend of $600. James A. Sauer Fellowship: One award for one month residency at ACOR. The fellowship includes a stipend of $400.

The Hamad bin Khalifa Travel Fellowship provides financial support to 15 individuals who wish to attend the 3 rd Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, to be held in Córdoba, Spain, November 2-4, 2009. The fellowships (made possible with funding from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, VCUQatar, and the Qatar Foundation) will cover the cost of round-trip travel to Córdoba as well as lodging and meals during the Symposium. Fellows will also be invited to attend special events such as receptions and excursions, will be awarded a Hamad bin Khalifa Fellowship certificate, and will receive copies of the proceedings of the 2nd Biennial Symposium, Rivers of Paradise: Water in Islamic Art and Culture, held in 2007, and the 3rd Biennial Symposium, held in Córdoba.
Criteria: The Hamad bin Khalifa fellowships are intended to enable junior and senior scholars at all levels to attend the Symposium. Preference will be given to applicants from diverse backgrounds with long-standing research interests in Islamic art and architecture. Individuals who have applied previously or have submitted papers in the past are encouraged to apply.

BOREN FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interest, including the Middle East.
Boren Fellowships provide support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. The minimum period of support is one academic semester. The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 over 24 months. Boren funding can begin no earlier than May 15, 2009.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen at the time of application. Either enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university located within the United States.
Government Service: In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren Fellows must agree to the NSEP Service Requirement.
Commitment to Government Service: Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a desire to work in the federal government.
Preferences: Boren Fellowships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.

McGill University's Faculty of Arts has received a significant grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish a postdoctoral fellowship program in the humanities and related social sciences. A world-renowned university located in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Montreal, Canada, McGill University is Canada's leading research-intensive university and has earned an
international reputation for scholarly achievement and scientific discovery. Founded in 1821, McGill has 21 faculties and professional schools, which offer more than 300 programs from the undergraduate to the doctoral level. McGill attracts renowned professors and researchers from around the world and top students from more than 150 countries, creating one of the most
dynamic and diverse education environments in North America. There are approximately 23,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 graduate students. It is one of two Canadian members of the American Association of Universities.
Three Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded for the academic year 2009-2010 to promising young scholars. The stipend for each fellow is $45,000 (plus benefits), in addition to a research allowance of $8500. The Fellowship is renewable once. Each fellow will teach a one-semester undergraduate course in each term and may be asked to give a public presentation on his or her research. Fellows will be provided with office space and are expected to be on campus making use of McGill's resources, particularly during the academic year.
Eligibility: Scholars who received their PhD after June 2006 or who will have received their PhD by May 31, 2009 in any discipline of the humanities or related social sciences are eligible to apply. Interdisciplinary applications are also welcome, and the Fellowships are open to scholars of any nationality.
To Apply: All applicants must be in contact with a member of the Faculty of Arts in advance to identify an appropriate supervisor for his or her work.
There is no application form. The application should include:
1) A statement of interest from the applicant detailing the proposed research project
2) A 1-page statement about recent experiences teaching undergraduate students

Description: The Turkish Cultural Foundation aims to sponsor research on subjects related to the art and culture of Turkey, and to studies related to the preservation of Turkey’s artistic and cultural heritage. Qualifications and Selection:
1. Fellowships are intended for those who are matriculated in a Ph.D. program and are engaged in the research phase of the degree program leading to a dissertation, or have a Ph.D., or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment. They must have completed their Ph.D. or equivalent professional training within the past 10 years.
2. Fellowship recipients will be selected based on the quality of the proposed research project and its relevance to the TCF’s mission. Academic standing, scholastic achievement, with a grade point average of at least 3.4, scholarly qualifications, publications, experience, and letters of reference will be weighed into the decision.
3. Candidates should be fluent in English, although the dissertations or the publications published as a result of this fellowship do not have to be in that language. All applicants are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. (TOEFL PBT 550, TOEFL CBT 213, TOEFL IBT 79, IELTS 7.0)
Grant and Fellowship Recipients’ Responsibilities :
1. Following completion of their fellowship year, fellowship recipients are required to submit a 5 to 10 page report on the studies accomplished as part of this fellowship (in English).
2. Upon subsequent completion of the Ph.D., doctoral students must send us a copy of their dissertation and a max. 2 page summary to be published on the Foundation’s website. Post-doctoral recipients should submit a copy of peer reviewed publication which results from their research sponsored by the TCF fellowship along with a max. 2 page summary of their work for the Foundation’s website.
3. We request that any publications resulting from work done under the auspices of a TCF grant acknowledge the TCF for its support.

HALIDE EDIP ADIVAR SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Awarded annually by the Turkish Studies Association. The aim of the Adivar Scholarship is to introduce Turkey to students who have not had extensive prior experience in Turkey or Turkish studies. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a qualified undergraduate in any discipline in support of travel to Turkey for the purpose of study or research. The successful applicant may use the scholarship to support participation in a Turkish language program, a work internship, or for study or research in Turkish culture and society. A scholarship applicant must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an institution of higher education and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada.

The Social Science Research Council, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, provides fellowships up to $5000 to humanities and social science students to support predissertation research. In addition to receiving funding, fellows participate in two four-day workshops organized around the research fields and bracketing the summer research. Workshop exercises prepare fellows in formulating doctoral dissertation proposals that are intellectually pointed, amenable to completion in a reasonable time frame, and competitive in future dissertation research fellowship competitions.
Workshops will be held May 29 - June 1 in Saint Louis, and September 11 - 14, 2008 in Milwaukee. Travel, lodging and meals for the two workshops are provided by the SSRC.
DPDF is open to early-stage graduate students in all disciplines of the social sciences and humanities who are currently enrolled full-time in PhD programs at accredited universities in the United States and whose predissertation research fits into one of the five research fields, one of which is:
Muslim Modernities
