Professor Binder's scholarly contributions have ranged from studies of classical Islamic political thought, to empirical analysis of Middle East political processes, to the post-modernist critique of contemporary ideologies, to the application of rational choice perspectives in studies of Middle East ethnic conflict. His book Islamic Liberalism has paved the way for an outpouring of literature on Islam and Democracy and has been translated into Turkish and Indonesian. His recent work has focused on international conflict in the Middle East.
