Joseph Massad is Associate Professor of modern Arab politics and intellectual history at Columbia University. He is author of Colonial Effects: The Making of National Identity in Jordan (Columbia U.P, 2001), The Persistence of the Palestinian Question: Essays on Zionism and the Palestinians (Routledge, 2006), and Desiring Arabs (U. Chicago Press, 2007). His books have been translated to Arabic and French. Professor
Massad also writes newspaper columns for the Egyptian Al-Ahram Weekly and for the Lebanese Daily, Al-Akhbar. His lecture at UCLA is part of his forthcoming book "Islam in Liberalism.
