Women's Studies Majors/MinorsInformation for Women's Studies students interested in EAP. Women's studies is an interdisciplinary field that grew out of the recognition that the experience and potential of over half the world's population should have real consequences for academic study and teaching, research and scholarship. By taking women seriously - both as subjects of inquiry and as inquiring subjects - we have discovered new ways of thinking about gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and their intersections in political, economic and social life.
The Department of Women's Studies provides an interdisciplinary curriculum that span departments, disciplines, and ideologies. It provide students the opportunity to study the full range of human experience and arrangements of social organization from the perspectives of those whose participation has been traditionally distorted, omitted, neglected, or denied -- women in their racial, class, sexual, national, and cultural diversity. Students develop critical reasoning and analytical skills, research and communication skills, a deep appreciation for complexities of power and asymmetries in gender relations across time, class, and cultures, and conceptual tools for social change. Emphasis on multidisciplinary, multiethnic, and transnational approaches assures a broader exposure to the humanities and social sciences than is commonly available within disciplinary confines. A background in women's studies offers unique contextual validation for today's gender controversies and prepares students for a wide range of career and life choices.
EAP offers UC students an exciting opportunity to expand their education in women’s and gender studies by investigating the significance of gender as a basic representational category in an international context. Students can observe how fundamental issues of sex and gender play out in other cultures, and can gain valuable insight into how distinct feminist perspectives and differing views of feminist scholarship are regarded outside of the United States. A comparative perspective in the field of women’s and gender studies challenges the process by which knowledge of human behavior is acquired, interpreted, and trasmitted. What classes to takeAll classes taken on the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) are UC approved courses and count toward your 180 unit requirement for graduation; however, your major has the final authority to determine how the coursework is used to fulfill specific major requirements. Courses are approved on a case by case basis and generally used for elective credit. Before going abroad, students should discuss with the department advisor which EAP courses the department will approve for credit toward a major or minor. Students can often make changes to their study plan once they arrive in their country of choice, but should consult with the department academic advisor by e-mail first.
