"If you are interested in studying abroad, then study abroad. Of course I could write about how wonderful and enriching studying abroad is, but you've heard it all before. If you choose not to participate, don't do so because you are afraid. You will regret it I assure you.

Whether you are a prospective student beginning to investigate your options, a student preparing to leave, currently abroad, returned from an EAP program, or an exchange student visiting UCLA, this section will provide you with a starting point to find the answers to your questions.

Your interest in studying abroad makes you part of a growing trend of students who leave their own country to study in another.

Last year 143,590 students left the United States to experience another part of the world through an academic program and 547,867 students from other countries came to study in the United States.

EAP alone sent over 2,400 students abroad last year and welcomed nearly 1,000 international students to UC campuses.

Interest in and support of study abroad is shared by many UCLA departments, international businesses, and national governments, some of which provide scholarships to encourage study abroad.

The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate are both considering an International Education Policy resolution whose aims are to:

  • Significantly increase the number of U.S. students participating in study abroad.
  • Promote greater diversity of locations, subjects, and languages involved in study abroad programs.
  • Ensure that U.S. college graduates have knowledge of a second language and a world area.
  • Strengthen the educational system through which Americans gain international expertise.
