BRUSSELS

View in the Grande Place at night.

How to Get There: Brussels is accessible by plane and train. If you fly with Ryan Air (www.ryanair.com) remember that they fly you into the Brussels Charleroi airport which is about an hour outside of central Brussels. To get to central Brussels take the Ryan Air shuttle which costs about $10.
Where to Stay: A great place to stay is the Centre Van Gogh (8, rue Traversière, 32 2 217 01 58, www.ping.be.chab ) in Brussels. It's about a ten-minute walk from the Grande Place and has a great atmosphere. It is clean and has a bar and a pool table with a lounge to meet people. Prices are cheap, around $15, and the people are really nice. The hostel is about a ten-minute walk uphill from the Brussels Nord station. It's a good idea to book a room in advance.

Where to Eat: If you stay at the Centre Van Gogh at the end of the block there is a shabby-looking but wonderful-tasting falafel restaurant with good prices. Other than that be sure to get some Belgian waffles, some VIN chaud(hot, spiced wine) and some incredible chocolate. These are all easy to find all over the city.

What to Do: Brussels is a simple but beautiful city. Be sure to visit the Grande Place during the day and at night. The cathedral is also worth a quick visit.Other than that there is the Manneken Pis, Brussels's hero. This tiny bronze fountain statue of a boy for some reason is the pride and joy of the city. You'll spend a while following signs to find it and once you get there you'll wonder if it's really it. Don't get me wrong, it's worth the adventure. The statue is of a boy peeing into the fountain and you'll have great pictures to show everyone when you get home. During celebrations and holidays the residents of Brussels have big parades and dress the little man up in various costumes.
