Indiana
University
Inner Asian and
Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC)
Summer Tibetan Language Study
June 14 - August 10
Indiana
University has long recognized the importance of Inner Asian
and Uralic Studies. In 1943 an Army Specialized Training Program
for Central Eurasian studies was organized at IU, and in 1956
the university established its own Program in Uralic and Altaic
Studies. Six years later IU became home to the Uralic and Altaic
Language and Area Center, which in 1981 was renamed the Inner
Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC). For the last
40 years, IU has gathered leading specialists, impressive library
collections, and other top-quality resources to create the nation's
premier program in Central Eurasian Studies. It has effectively
utilized these resources to provide quality training and outreach
programs that continue to serve the entire country.
IU's
greatest concentration of expertise and instruction is located
within the Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS). CEUS
and other Center faculty are specialists on civilizations stretching
from the Baltics, Hungary, and Turkey to Central Asia, Tibet,
and Mongolia. They pursue both historical and contemporary analysis
in a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, business,
comparative literature, economics, folklore, history, journalism,
linguistics, music and drama, political science, public administration,
and religious studies. During each academic year, IAUNRC offers
three levels of instruction in all of the following living languages
indigenous to the Center’s area: Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian,
Mongolian, Persian/Tajik, Tibetan, Turkish and Uzbek. Other living
and classical languages of Central Eurasia are offered less frequently,
including Chagatai, Evenki, Kazak, Kyrgyz, Mordvin, Tibetan,
Turkmen, and Uygur.
The 2002 SWSEEL Workshop
at Indiana University will offer Azeri (first year), Kazakh (first
year), Turkmen (first year) and Uzbek (first and
second year) as part of its program in Central Asian Languages.
Tibetan and Georgian will
also be offered.
Deadline for fellowship
applications: April 1, 2002.

Pondicherry
Centre, Ecole francaise d'Extreme-Orient
Classic
Tamil Winter School
Will
take place in Pondicherry from 20th January - 15th February 2003. The
students and researchers who participate will spend four weeks
on the study of classical Tamil, in the Pondicherry Centre of the
EFEO. Participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of modern
Tamil or another Dravidian language. We hope they will end the
course able to read some ancient and medieval Tamil literature.
The first five days of the week will be devoted to language and
literature. The mornings will be reserved for grammar lessons given
by two European scholars, exercises and necessary preparations
for the next day and afternoon readings. The afternoons are to
be devoted to the reading of classical texts with the Tamil pandits
of the EFEO. Experts will lecture during the course. There will
be plenty of opportunities for direct contact with Tamil culture
because of the location of the Centre.
Two complementary
approaches to the texts will be offered---traditional and occidental---and
thus the opportunity to learn from both. We hope that the CTWS
will contribute to the training of future generations of scholars.
The address of
the website giving all the necessary information will be provided
within a fortnight.

Summer Session
in Tibetan - The Language of the Land of the Snow
Mountains
Dates: June 11-August
8, 2002
Students
are offered two years (12 U.Va. credit hours) of Tibetan in an
intensive, total immersion atmosphere. The program will focus
on modern spoken and written Tibetan according to the Central
Tibetan dialect using a draft translation of Nicolas Tournadre
and Sangdak Dorje's Manual of Standard Tibetan, and oriented
towards producing hearing and speaking proficiency. In addition,
it will utilize new multimedia materials being developed by the
Digital Tibetan Language Learning Resources from original film
shot in Tibet. The last unit of the summer will then offer a
bridge to classical literary Tibetan on the basis of mastery
of modern Tibetan. The program represents a new system that departs
from the previous model used up until last year at Virginia.
The
drill instructor will be a native Tibetan speaker, while a second
native Tibetan speaker will live with interested students in
the Tibetan Language House (to which all students will have access)
and will be available daily from 5-9pm. Cultural group activities
are held during the evenings, as well as sessions to reinforce
the days lessons.
