"Philippine Nationalism Viewed From Spanish America: Contrasts and Parallels"
Benedict Anderson
5 p.m.
HSSB, 6th floor, Mc Cune Conference Room, U.C. Santa Barbara Reception Follows." How distant is the Philippines from the rest of the "Pacific Empire" of Spain, and how close. How much of today's differences come from the Old Empire, how much from the American occupation? Thematic focuses are language (Spanish or indigenous), exterminations or not, catholicization, haciendas/big landowners, mestizaje (who is mixed?), lateness (Is the Philippines to be compared to Marti's Cuba rather than San Martin's Chile and Peru?). In what ways does the Spanish Philippines raise questions for Latin (Spanish) America?"
