"Secret World of the Forbidden City: Splendors From China's Imperial Palace"
This exhibition features the largest collection of items (more than 300 objects) ever loaned by Beijing's Palace Museum. According to the museum, these objects have been in storage and are now being displayed for the first time. In addition to various items of clothing, jewelry, paintings, and ceramics, the exhibition includes a recreation of the Hall of Supreme Harmony.

An evening with Indonesian dramatist and activist, Ratna Sarumpaet

RSVP: (213) 385-5948Ratna Sarumpaet’s “Marsinah Accuses,” a dramatic monologue by a young woman who was tortured, raped and murdered for trying to speak against the inhuman conditions in the factory where she worked, will be performed by American actor Tikka Sears.
After the performance Sarumpaet will answer questions from the audience and talk about issues relating to freedom of speech and censorship in Indonesia. Sarumpaet was jailed for two months in 1997 for participating in a street-theater protest that defied a government ban on the performance of “Marsinah Accuses.”
Presented by Freedom to Write Committee of PEN USA West. Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Freedom to Write Fund of PEN USA West, which provides material support to writers in danger around the world and underwrites PEN West’s Annual Freedom to Write Awards honoring international champions of freedom of expression.

Dr. Lau is a rising star in Chinese studies. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and is a Research Fellow at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, R.O.C. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard-Yenching institute this past year, and has just returned from lecturing in Europe. His numerous publications address Chinese law, family structure, and social history, focusing on the Sung dynasty. Most recently he has edited and contributed to a volume entitled "Law, Thought, and Society in the Sung and Yuan period."
