Collaboration/Extending the Classroom

Collaboration

Web discussion boards or listserv discussion lists can be organized in such a fashion as to facilitate collaboration among group members within a single class or among members from several different schools. Students can use the boards to discuss projects, make assignments, report on work done, and exchange draft presentations. Teachers can readily monitor group progress and individual participation.

Extending the Classroom

University High School history teacher Gadi Rowelsky, a participant in the Center's 1998 and 1999 Summer Seminars for Educators was inspired by demonstrations of web discussion technologies that he has forged a partnership with a teacher in Germany to have their students use the boards to exchange ideas on a wide variety of subjects. For 1999, Rowelsky has created a special section of his world history course which requires extensive on-line research, collaboration, and discussion.
