The United States From the Outside In, 1776-2000

(3rd Annual Harvard Graduate Conference on International History)

Call for Papers

Website:  http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~cwc/ConIH/

Dates:  March 7-8, 2003 in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Abstract Deadline:  November 15, 2002

Conference Information:

The Department of History and Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University invite graduate students to submit paper proposals for the 3rd Annual Harvard Graduate Conference on International History (ConIH), to take place in Cambridge, Massachusetts on March 7-8, 2003. This conference aims to bring together graduate students and faculty who are engaged in the study of international history.

The theme of this year's conference is "The United States from the Outside In, 1776-2000." This theme stresses how governments, non-state actors, and individuals view the United States and how these views shape relations with the United States. Papers may address popular and elite images of the United States abroad; their influence on diplomacy with the United States; and/or United States reactions to such images. The conference also welcomes topics related to the local consequences of introducing United States culture and/or power into other nations or regions.

The Harvard Graduate Conference is intended to highlight innovative research agendas particularly those involving multi-archival work in multiple countries and languages. Also, because the Charles Warren Center's theme for this year is "Film In History, Film As History," papers addressing the role of international cinema and other forms of popular media are especially encouraged. Finally, proposals should suggest how the paper relates to broader themes in international history.

Commentary on papers will be provided by leading scholars from Harvard and other universities. Past commentators have included, among others, Sven Beckert, Mark Bradley, Lizabeth Cohen, Matthew Connelly, Nick Cullather, Judith Ewell, Jessica Gienow-Hecht, Akira Iriye, Patrick Manning, Ernest May, Frank Ninkovich, Susan Pedersen, Richard Pells, Emily Rosenberg, and Bin Wong.

Graduate student presenters who must travel from outside New England will receive a small stipend to help defray expenses. Details will be available in the weeks ahead on the conference website.

Graduate students who are interested in participating in the conference should submit a one-page paper proposal and curriculum vita (in Word, RTF, or PDF format) to Evan Dawley (dawley@fas.harvard.edu). Proposals must be received by November 15, 2002 in order to be considered. Notification of acceptance will be made by December 15, 2002. For additional information about the conference, please contact Evan Dawley or visit the conference website.
