The Otago Conference on Japanese Cultural Nationalism in Literature, Culture, and Intellectual History

August 20-22, 2002
Otago University
Dunedin, New Zealand

This will be a small, theme-focused conference organized so that all participants can attend all sessions, with only one paper delivered at a time. Through the generous sponsorship of the Japan Foundation, five speakers have been invited from Japan. The conference is open freely to all who wish to attend, and a limited number of spaces are open for scholars who wish to present papers. It is expected that the conference ultimately will result in a book of essays related to its central theme.

As well as papers on nationalism and issues of national identity in Japanese literature, culture and intellectual history per se, Japan-related papers from a wider geographical perspective would also be very welcome: for instance, papers relating to cultural nationalism in countries colonized by Japan (either during or in response to the period of colonization); papers dealing with the influence of Japanese on other Asian cultural nationalisms; or papers dealing with cultural nationalism in the Japanese diaspora (Brazil, USA, etc.).

There is no conference fee but all participants must register by sending an email to: roy.starrs@stonebow.otago.ac.nz,  stating their intention to attend and giving their name and affiliation. Those who would like to apply to present a paper should email an abstract of their proposed paper to the same address. The deadline is June 15, 2002 and applicants will be informed of whether their papers have been accepted shortly after that date. Paper presenters will be provided with lunch and dinner for the duration of the conference, but no other form of financial assistance is available. (However, help can be provided in finding reasonably priced accommodation on or near the campus, to be paid for by the participant.)
