The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for graduate
students to meet and interact and to present their research within the
Humanities and Social Sciences pertaining to East Asia. Discussion is
encouraged on the interrelation between geography --natural or
political, urban or rural, real or imaginary -- and identity.
The primary language of the conference will be English; however, a
limited number of panels will be held in Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
Submissions in any of these four languages are welcome.
The panel discussions will be held on October 5. The round-table
discussion on "East Asia After September 11" will be held on
October 4. Any research papers on this subject will be presented
separately then.
Papers should be no longer than 15 minutes. Participants are
encouraged to form panels of three, if possible.
Abstracts of no more than 200 words are to be submitted by July
20, 2002. Abstracts in a language other than English must be
accompanied by an English translation. Abstracts and panel proposals
should be submitted electronically by e-mail or as an attachment. Please
also include a cover letter indicating your name, program, school,
number of years in graduate studies and research interests, or include a
brief, one page curriculum vitae. Papers of no more than 7 pages should
be submitted electronically no later than August 20, 2002 so that
panel discussants will have time to read them and prepare comments in
advance. If possible, English, Japanese and Chinese papers should be
submitted electronically in Microsoft Word and Korean papers in HWPW (Arae
A Hangul). These papers will be considered "as is" for
publication in a conference volume.
We thank you for observing these guidelines. Please direct abstracts,
