International Conference on Political Science and China in Transition

July 15-16  2002
Beijing, China

China has come to a crossroads in many ways. Domestically, a leadership succession process is under way and a new leadership will possibly emerge after the 16th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party to be held later this year. This new leadership will face many old pressing issues as well as new challenges, especially now that China has joined WTO. Internationally, the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001 significantly changed the international environment for China. As a result of the strategic shift in its foreign policy to fighting global terrorism, the U.S. has adopted a new and more conciliatory and cooperative approach toward China, which provides the PRC with a more conducive international environment to develop its economy. Yet, relations with Taiwan remain a sticky issue for the Chinese government and still have the potential to become an explosive issue in Sino-U.S. relations.

Given these important issues confronting China and the need to exchange ideas and research findings between Chinese political scientists and international China scholars, the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, the School of Politics and Public Administration at Zhongshan University and the Association of Chinese Political Studies (USA) will hold an international conference  in Beijing between July 15 and 16, 2002.

Proposed preliminary panels include:
1. Chinese state and society
2. Local governance in China
3. Chinese political culture
4. New developments of political science discipline in China
5. Administrative reform in China after WTO
6. Change of international system after 9.11
7. China’s foreign policy and external relations after 9.11
