The Research Association for the Study of Chinese Ritual Drama (Zhongguo
nuoxi xue yanjiu hui) will be holding its annual meeting and field
trip in Sichuan in late July 2002. The main site of activity will be
Songpan and Maoxian, districts adjacent to the famous scenic area of the
Jiuzhaigou Gorge (a world nature heritage site), and gathering points
for the Qiang people and the White Horse (Baima) Tibetans. The Qiang
first arose among the ancient sheep-herding tribes of Gansu, Qinghai,
and Shaanxi. They have preserved many remnants of this ancient culture,
including thousand-year old architecture, the worship of white stone,
ritual ceremonies for sacrificing to the mountain, legends, shamanistic
drama, and masked dance. Songpan has also preserved special forms of
choral and instrumental music. Few people in the world today are aware
of this cultural heritage, but it is an invaluable resource for anyone
interested in theater and performance studies, anthropology, religion,
folklore, the arts, or the history of Sichuanese culture. For this
reason, together with the Sichuan Provincial Ritual Drama Association,
the Society for Qiang Studies, and the local government, we have
co-organized a six-day research trip and conference to be held in
Maoxian.
