Research Fellow and Program Coordinator (Academic Coordinator-I)The UC system-wide Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) based at the University of California, San Diego (http://www-igcc.ucsd.edu/), invites applications for the position of Research Fellow and Program Coordinator. IGCC leads the Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), a "track two" diplomatic forum for government officials and experts from United States, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea to discuss regional security issues. Responsibilities include working with Principal Investigator to organize and attend meetings, serve as rapporteur, write reports and proceedings. Undertake evaluation and assessment of NEACD and other track two dialogues in the Asia Pacific; interact with working group leaders and international relations experts. Write independent articles as well as co-author articles on multilateral diplomacy in Asia Pacific, including track two diplomacy. Co-Director, Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR)Pending approval of funding for this position, Indiana University is seeking a co-director for the Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region; CeLCAR is a national language resource center that promotes the teaching and learning of languages of Central Asia, Azerbaijan, and Afghanistan. The Co-Director will be responsible for developing and directing a coherent set of Center projects. Together with the CeLCAR Director of Curriculum Development, every four years the Co-Director will write the Center's Title VI grant application to the US Department of Education. At present, this is the largest source of CeLCAR support. The Co-Director will actively seek funding for appropriate projects beyond the scope of the Title VI grant. The Co- Director will also represent the Center's interests to the University and to outside entities. All of these activities will be undertaken in close cooperation with the CeLCAR Director. The Co-Director will hold a full-time non-tenure-track appointment in one or more departments and/or programs relevant to his or her area of specialization. In addition to duties at CeLCAR, he or she will teach one class per semester.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in applied linguistics or a closely related discipline; a background in LCTL (lesson commonly taught language) teaching; familiarity with current (e.g. communicative and proficiency-based) approaches to language pedagogy; an understanding of language teaching materials development; and extensive experience of grant- writing, supervision, and academic administration. Director of Language Curriculum Development, Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR)The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR), is currently seeking a full-time experienced specialist in materials development and proficiency-based language teaching to direct its curricular development program for Central Asian languages funded under a Title VI grant. At present the Center is developing introductory and intermediate materials for four languages--Pashto, Uyghur, Tajik, and Uzbek. The position is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment, with full benefits.
Requirements and Responsibilities: The successful applicant should have a Master’s degree, or preferably a Ph.D., in applied linguistics or a closely related discipline. He or she must be experienced in designing curricular materials for less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), be familiar with task- based, proficiency-based, and communicative approaches to materials design, and be able to conduct workshops on a range of topics in curriculum development and language pedagogy for center staff. The Director of Language Curriculum Development will provide overall direction and supervision for each of the Center’s curriculum development language projects noted above. The Center curriculum development staff includes native-speaking language developers for each language, curriculum development and computer assisted language learning (CALL) specialists, and programming staff. The goal of each language project is to produce proficiency-oriented course materials for beginning and intermediate levels of language instruction, in print and electronic (CD-ROM, Web) form, and to teach these languages during the eight-week intensive summer language institutes held annually in Bloomington. The Director of Language Curriculum Development will work closely with the CeLCAR Director and Co-Director in preparing applications for funding to the US Department of Education, and in assuring that projects funded through Title VI are coordinated with other CeLCAR projects. The Libraries of the University of California, Irvine invite applications for the position of Southeast Asian Archive Project Archivist in the Department of Special Collections and Archives. The position will be funded by a grant (October 1, 2003 to April 30, 2005) awarded to UCI by the National Endowment for the Humanities for archival processing and digitization of the Southeast Asian Archive. This appointment will be in the Librarian Series at the Assistant rank.
Under the direction of the Manuscripts Librarian, the Project Archivist is responsible for archival processing of collections in the Southeast Asian Archive. Specific activities include appraisal, preparation of work plans, physical processing and organization of materials, preservation activities, and preparation of complete finding aids. Encodes finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and prepares archival cataloging records using Archives, Personal Papers, and Manuscripts and the USMARC format. Trains and supervises processing assistants. The Project Archivist will also be responsible for managing the digitization process for approximately 5,000 items from processed archival collections, which will form the core of an online resource for the study of the Southeast Asian American community. The Project Archivist will develop selection guidelines in conjunction with the Southeast Asian Archive Librarian and others; select and physically prepare materials for digitization by vendors; create item-level descriptive metadata for materials to be digitized according to national and project specifications; manage and track the digitization process while materials are in the hands of the vendors, including responding to questions from the vendors; perform quality control checks on all files returned by the vendors; proof completed digital objects and their metadata; and perform other project-related duties as assigned.

-- A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in archival studies.

Project title: Ergonomic Intervention study for Sewing Machine Operators

This study is funded by NIH. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a newly developed ergonomic intervention applied to sewing machine operators is working in Los Angeles garment shops. 300 subjects will be recruited and enrolled in the study. The racial composition of the participants is expected to be predominantly Hispanic and Chinese, since LA garment workers are most likely recruited from recent immigrants from South American and Southern Asian countries. Most of the proposed subjects are Cantonese speakers; therefore several interviewers who can speak Cantonese well will be needed to conduct the interviews.

For the Spring semester, we are seeking an applicant in the area of Asian Political Science who can teach the Asian Studies G.E. course, along with a course in Asian Political Science. An M.A. or Ph.D. candidacy in an Asian Studies field required. Teaching experience preferred.

Southeast Asian StudiesThe College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of California, Riverside, is seeking to fill a junior, tenure-track faculty position in Southeast Asian Studies. UCR is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse campuses in the country and is located in a region that is home to several large Southeast Asian diaspora communities. Sponsored by the Luce Fund for Asian Studies, this position and a related senior position simultaneously being recruited will be key to the development of UCR's Southeast Asian Studies Program.
The Assistant Professor position will be appointed in the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages and will focus on Southeast Asian literature and language study, with a preference for the language and literature of Indonesia, the Philippines, or Vietnam. We seek candidates with complementary expertise in other areas of strength in the College, including comparative literature and literary theory, cross-cultural comparative studies, and interests in visual culture and performance studies. We are particularly interested in scholars who show extraordinary promise and ability in comparative and interdisciplinary research and in the teaching of literature and language. The successful candidate will work with other faculty in developing a Southeast Asian Studies program at UCR. Ph.D. is required.
