The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is a non-profit organization that has been providing civil legal services to low-income people in metropolitan Los Angeles for over 70 years. By helping to strengthen communities and change policies and laws that unfairly impact the poor, we attack the roots of poverty and effect systemic change.
The Asian and Pacific Islander Community Outreach unit (API unit) was created to serve monolingual APIs who are unable to access services through LAFLA's main system. Using our own expertise in specific areas of law and working closely with other Client Services units and community-based organizations, the API unit ensures that Asian and Pacific Islander clients have access to LAFLA's full range of services in Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Khmer.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is one of the largest legal services programs in the United States, with approximately 150 employees, including 60 attorneys. The Program has an annual operating budget of more than seven million dollars, and LAFLA provides legal services to approximately 21,000 indigent residents of Los Angeles each year.
QUALIFICATIONS - Must be computer proficient; has experience with Word and Excel; Good communication skills, both written and oral, and ability to work with detailed projects; Able to work with a diverse group of people. Bilingual in an Asian language required.
DUTIES - Performs a variety of administrative tasks for Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Community Outreach Unit attorneys and legal advocates with minimal supervision; Coordinates schedules for staffing of language lines and clinics; Collects data and compiles various client service and project evaluation reports; Coordinates meetings, trainings, and presentations; Designs, maintains and implements filing system.

Program & Communications Coordinator

Organizational Position:
The Program & Communications Coordinator will work under the general supervision of the Executive Director and in direct cooperation with program and operations staff in the Oakland office and the program staff for the Nichibei Pathfinding Opportunity Program (NPOP) in the JUCEE Tokyo office. Job Duties:
In program duties, Coordinator will work closely with NPOP counterpart staff in the Tokyo office in all aspects of the planning, preparation, implementation, and follow-up for JUCEE s NPOP program. NPOP provides fellowship opportunities for U.S. nonprofit professionals to work with nonprofit organizations in Japan. Primary tasks will include recruiting U.S. participants, providing orientations for selected participants, making travel arrangements, coordinating and promoting post-program events in the U.S., creating effective publications for the program, conducting evaluations, maintaining contact with former participants, and reporting to funders. Position requires 3 week trip to Japan in the fall during the implementation of the NPOP program.In communications duties, Coordinator will be responsible for creating and disseminating a clear and accurate representation of JUCEE in the local community. Primary responsibilities will include coordinating production of all printed organizational materials, including design and layout of newsletters, annual reports, and other mailings, and working with other program staff to publish program promotional materials such as brochures and program reports. Coordinator will also be responsible for event coordination, developing and maintaining media relations, and recruiting interns and volunteers for the office.
Requirements:
-- Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments, prioritize competing tasks and meet deadlines, and have strong attention to detail;
-- Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills;
-- Experience working in nonprofit, non-government or community-based organization in either the U.S. or Japan;
-- Able to handle multiple tasks and stick to program deadlines;
-- Cultural sensitivity appropriate for working in a multicultural environment with diverse constituencies;
-- Macintosh computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker, PageMaker, Eudora).
Desired skills:
-- Fluency in Japanese and English;
-- Experience coordinating programs with people from various backgrounds and levels of professional experience;
-- Knowledge of U.S.-Japan relations, cross-cultural and social issues, and the nonprofit sectors of both countries;

Long-Term Volunteer InternsThe Asia Society Southern California Center offers long- and short-term (minimum of 10 weeks) volunteer internships with opportunities to focus on the following areas: content research and reports; program planning; and grant research and proposal writing. Interns will work directly with the Program Associate.
Intern may receive academic credit, depending on practice of respective academic institutions. We ask a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for a minimum of one full quarter or one full semester. This is an unpaid internship. A modest stipend for transportation is available on a case-by-case basis. Interns are welcome to participate as guests at all programs offered by the Asia Society Southern California Center during the period of the internship.
Qualifications:
