1869 The former daimyo of Satsuma, Choshu, Tosa, and Hizen were made governors of these prefectures.

1969 The Guam Doctrine (the Nixon Doctrine) was first publicly proclaimed: there was a five sided power balance in the world (US, USSR, Japan, Western Europe, China) and US allies should do more to defend themselves.
