1883 James Logan, British customs officer, killed a Chinese boy. Logan was sentenced under British law to seven years in prison for manslaughter.
1898 Spain and the U.S. signed a peace protocol in Washington, D.C., ending their war. The U.S. assumed control of Spanish colonies in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Cuba became independent.
