Academica Sinica

Established in 1928 in Nanjing, China and now based in Taipei, Taiwan, Academica Sinica is a large and respected center of research and graduate training. The bilingual AS website offers a wide array of information about the institution as well as access to the large AS databases which include dynastic histories and more.

Center for Chinese Studies, University of California, Los Angeles

In addition to information about the UCLA China Studies program, faculty members, and scholarships, this site features details about conferences organized by the center. In some cases the papers to be presented at the conferences appear on the site as well.

Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation

Established in 1989, the foundation offers fellowships for graduate and postgraduate research as well as institutional support.

The China Institute in America

Established in 1926 by John Dewey and Hu Shih, the China Institute seeks to promote understanding of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture. Based in New York, the organization has its own gallery and lecture series. In addition, it supports the development of curriculum materials and provides speakers for corporate functions.

Committee on Scholarly Communication with China

CSCC (formerly CSCPRC) is a U.S. program under the American Council of Learned Societies and for many years has sponsored graduate and postgraduate research in China. Program descriptions and application forms are available at the CSCC/ACLS website.

Provides links to pages relating to the life and work of Joseph Needham, the great China scholar and historian of  science, and to the ways in which his work is being continued and developed. A list of the works published in the Science and Civilization in China series as well as Needham's formal letter requesting the Cambridge University Press publish the work is included.

Social Science Research Council

This U.S. based nongovernmental body supports research in a wide variety of areas. The SSRC website describes the organization's programs, many of which are open to non-U.S. citizens are support graduate training, dissertation work, postdoctoral training and research, professional foreign travel, and institutional support.

The China Journal
The Contemporary China Centre, Australian National University

You can peruse the table of contents of the current issue and previous issues at this site. The journal is published twice a year. Abstracts are included on-line.

Chinese Science

This annual journal began publication in 1975 and since 1993 has been published at UCLA. UCLA history professor Benjamin Elman serves as the editor and is assisted by Richard Gunde. The UCLA Center for Chinese Studies and the UCLA Center for Pacific Rim Studies collaborate in producing the journal. Recent issues are available on-line as are tables of contents from earlier issues.

The Road to East Asia

This is an e-journal founded and edited by York University's Isabella Wai. Most articles are written by Prof. Wai's students and deal with writers and contemporary literature, principally of China, but also of other cultures.

Agriculture

Agricultural Graphs and Maps

The University of California, Davis's East Asia Center on Population Resources and Welfare has prepared an extensive and easy to access collection of graphs showing agricultural output by crop, region, and year. In addition, GIS agricultural maps of China are available.

Stefan Landsberger's Chinese Propaganda Posters Pages

Landsberger provides several excellent examples of these posters in his pages, includes an extensive list of other poster sites, and includes a good bibliography. He contributed to the excellent virtual and real exhibition "The Chairman Smiles" at the Groninger Museum in Amsterdam.

Oliver Laude's Chinese Posters

Oliver Laude visited China between 1989 and 1992 and assembled a terrific collection of pop culture artifacts. Among these are posters and stamps. The translations of the captions are sometimes a little rough, but the images are extremely sharp and interesting.

To listen to web radio broadcasts or to watch web television broadcasts, you need a piece of software known as a player. You can download a player without charge from the Real Networks website. Some sites have Quicktime movies available. Download the Quicktime viewer from Apple. Of course, much of the text on these  sites is in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Download the NJWin viewer for a free trial to permit you to do this.

Across the Country

This PRC government site houses a great deal of information on various places in China. There are pages devoted to each of China's major municipalities, provinces, and regions. The Shanghai page, for example, includes introductory materials to the economy of the rural suburbs, foreign trade, and more.

Calendar Conversion Help

Traditionally, Chinese noted the year by the reign title of the emperor and the year of the reign. Beginning with the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, the ROC used the same system with the word republic ("minguo") preceeding the year. This system remains in use in Taiwan. In the People's Republic of China, the common era designation is used. Click here to visit a handy conversion table for the period 1860-the present.

China the Beautiful (Chinapage.com)

Ming L. Pei's site focuses on Chinese literature and the arts, including pages devoted to calligraphy, poetry, opera, philosophical works and more. It is well-illustrated and easy to use, ranking among the best bilingual sites around.

          China Homepage

Maintained in Beijing by the Institute of High Energy Physics. In addition to science and technology, there are also resources on culture and society. Includes a section offering short biographies of "women in China" and "women in Beijing." Most of those featured have an impressive list of scholarly, managerial, or entrepreneurial achievements.

 Country Study: China

The US Library of Congress has compiled a great deal of information about China into this print/on-line guide. This edition contains data gathered through 1987.

 China Vista

This is a fun site with jokes, recipes, and news about Chinese business, tourism, and culture. Business news includes market reports and analysis of trends. Various goods are available for on-line purchase as well. The travel section features photos and descriptions of several destinations.

Walton's Infonet

Includes a chat section and personal homepages.

Government

Constitution of the PRC

1982 version and 1988 modifications are available at several sites, including the Washburn University School of Law and the US House of Representatives law site. The International Constitutional Law site has the 1988 version and a key for finding particular sections quickly.

PRC New York Consulate

Primarily summaries and simple introductory materials. Official statistics on education, economy, ethnicities, science, culture, and so on. Visa information is also available.

PRC Government Structure

Inside China Today, a web-based news service, has compiled a collection of brief articles on various parts of China's government including the National People's Congress, the State Council, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, State Level Corporations, and the Presidency.

A small but interesting page with artifacts from the Cultural Revolution, including stamps, dictionary extracts, a song denouncing Liu Shaoqi, and more.

UC San Diego Chinese History Bibliography

This bibliography includes reference works in Chinese and English.

 Human Rights

During the Democracy Wall movement in the winter of 1978-79, some activists composed a Declaration of Human Rights. The International Constitutional Law site has a translation of this document.

Amnesty International on China

Amnesty International is also listed under "Human Rights" but their extensive work on China merits inclusion here as well. Among the resources worth investigating is an interactive program they've developed for downloading. "Legacy of Tiananmen" is free and is available for Windows and Macintosh computers.

Language

Chinese-English dictionary

In Big-5 code, the dictionary shows the creation of over 4000 characters from about 200 simple ideographs and pictographs.  A printed edition was published in August 1996. This site does not require special software and allows newcomers to the language a quick look at how Chinese characters are constructed. Highly recommended for newcomers to the language or for browsers.

Chinese language teaching/study

This is a much improved site. It now includes links to a variety of study aids, including sites where sound files may be downloaded. A list of shortwave sources of news in Chinese is also provided.

An operation named Ocrat has created a website which uses VOA Mandarin broadcasts as part of a language teaching program. It is not affiliated with the VOA, but is well worth a visit. The Ocrat home page offers a variety of other resources, including animated character instruction.

In the last decade, this museum has dramatically improved the manner in which it preserves and displays its impressive collection. And now - some of the collection can be seen via the web. The site offers both Chinese and English language pages.

Beijing Review

A nearly forty-year old publication conveying the views of the PRC government on events and trends in China and elsewhere. Based at the China Internet Information Center.

China and the World (Zhongguo yu Shijie)

Electronic magazine with sections in Chinese and English. Contents can be read on screen without special software (GIF formatted), but articles are in GB code or in Postscript and must be downloaded. Includes historic speeches by Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong.

China Daily

Official PRC English-language newspaper published in Beijing and circulated in China and elsewhere. Full text articles with news on China and Chinese views of the world.

China Internet Information Center

Operated by the PRC government, this is a useful resource, allowing web surfers access to publications such as China Today, Chinese Literature, and Beijing Review.

China News

This is an umbrella site for official views from the People's Republic of China. The site (and its mirror in the US) contain links to several publications (including China Today and Beijing Review). Many people will find the government white paper section of the site particularly useful. These white papers are extensive discussions of major issues, including human rights in China and Chinese foreign policy. The Tribune for Special Topics section includes texts of speeches, press conferences and more. This section's Hong Kong subsection even includes the official posters commemorating the 1997 resumption of control over Hong Kong.

China News Agency -- articles on Washington, Taipei, and Beijing relations

This page lists recent articles from Taiwan's official government news agency on Taiwan-US-China affairs.

China News Digest

Copyright worries and time have lessened this source of information about China, but it remains a useful digest of news concerning China. The all volunteer crew at CND also publishes digests aimed primarily at Chinese living in particular places (e.g. North America) and maintains an excellent website. You can look into the CND archives and visit virtual exhibits.

China Online

This business-oriented site includes translations from the Chinese press and articles from China observers. For a charge, the site's owners will provide translations of articles not listed on the site.

China Today

Formerly known as China Reconstructs, this is a general interest publication established by Song Qingling, the widow of Sun Yatsen in the early 1950s.

Inside China Today

This is a remarkable compendium of news and photos culled from Chinese and foreign reports. It is updated daily. This site also provides a great deal of background information about governmental structure (for China and for Taiwan), religion, education, and more. Highly useful.

Shanghai Daily

This website focuses on local economic, social, and cultural news and offers information on the weather. A link to a 20 minute English language newscast is included at the site. It is possible to look at back issues as well.

People's Daily

The Chinese Communist Party's official voice, People's Daily is published in Beijing and distributed all over China and an overseas edition is printed and distributed abroad. The paper's website offers stories in Chinese, English, and Japanese. Click here for the US mirror site.

Deng endorsed the violent suppression of the Beijing pro-democracy demonstrations. On June 9, 1989, he addressed a group of army officers. The text is translated from a Beijing Television broadcast and is located at The Gate of Heavenly Peace website.

Obituaries and Funeral Coverage

The Detroit Free Press

The Free Press has created an admirable site, "Farewell to Deng Xiaoping," which includes a clickable map of the funeral site, a pronunciation guide, and brief snippets on how Deng changed China and who has taken over leadership of the world's largest country.

Foreign Affairs

The Foreign Affairs website offers a set of statements from Deng's family, Xinhua (China's government news agency), and various world leaders marking the 1997 death of Deng Xiaoping.

The Newshour Online

PBS's Newshour featured a British news agency's report on the death of Deng Xiaoping and a discussion among U.S. China watchers Arthur Hummel, Michel Oksenberg, Minxin Pei, and Jim Hoagland on Deng's legacy. The page offers both a print transcript and a Real Audio feed. A week later, the Newshour covered Deng's funeral and further discussed his legacy with Winston Lord and Zbigniew Brzezinski.

South China Morning Post

SCMP is the largest circulation English-language daily newspaper in Hong Kong. The paper's webpage on Deng's death includes short .wav audio file clips of the Chinese Central Television's announcement of Deng's death (in English and Mandarin). The site also offers an extensive photo collection (e.g. Deng with family members, Deng with Mao, Deng with Ho Chi Minh, and Deng with Jimmy Carter).

World Socialist Website

In March 1997, the website of the International Committee of the Fourth International offered a harsh assessment the impact of Deng's reforms on the Chinese public.

Jiang Zemin 江泽民

Following the June 4, 1989 suppression of the pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing and the arrest of Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Zhao Ziyang, Deng Xiaoping and other senior leaders selected Jiang Zemin, the relatively little-known head of the Shanghai branch of the Communist Party to take over as titular chief of the CCP. Jiang now holds three important posts: CCP General Secretary, President (primarily a ceremonial position), and chair of the CCP's Central Military Commission (effectively commander in chief of the Chinese military).

People's Daily Celebration of Jiang

Renmin Ribao (People's Daily) is the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party. This website offers a biography, photos, translations of speeches, and "the latest news" involving Jiang Zemin.

Mao Zedong (毛泽东  Mao Tse-tung)

The Mao Zedong Internet Archive

Extensive collection of Mao's speeches and essays. This is part of the Marx/Engels Internet Archive.

Mao Badges

During the China's Cultural Revolution workplaces, tourist destinations, and other organizations developed badges featuring Chairman Mao Zedong. These were energetically collected by many young revolutionaries and are now collected by those interested in memorabilia from a remarkable period in China's history. Mao Sayings

Part of Rick Harbaugh's Chinese-English Dictionary site, this collection of sayings from "The Little Red Book" include the Chinese original (in simplified characters) and the English translation.

Marco Polo

Wang Dan

This 20 year old student was among the leaders of the Tian'anmen Square demonstrations in 1989. This page, created in advance of a talk he gave at UCLA, includes links to articles and petitions concerning Wang Dan and his fellow pro-democracy activists.

Wei Jingsheng

An electrician at the Beijing Zoo, Wei came to international attention through his "Democracy Wall" era essay: "The Fifth Modernization: Democracy" circulated in December 1978. He was subsequently tried and convicted of providing a foreigner with state secrets. Altogether, Wei served two prison stints, totalling 19 years. Read "The Fifth Modernization" at the Democracy in China website.

Wei's prison writings have been translated and published as The Courage to Stand Alone. This site includes information about Wei's activities and views since he was released from prison and expelled from China on November 16, 1997.

In 1992, while still a prisoner, Wei Jingsheng wrote to Deng Xiaoping about the Chinese government's handling of Tibet.

Wei has advocated using trade sanctions to pressure China into political reform. Not long after his release, he wrote "What to do about China" for Newsweek magazine.

On February 3, 1998, Wei testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights. A transcript of his testimony is available at the American Foreign Policy Council's website.

Clinton in China

In 1998, Bill Clinton made the first U.S. state visit to China in nine years. This page includes photographs from the visit and links to sites where one can read news articles and full text copies of the speeches and press conferences presented during the visit.

United States Embassy in Beijing

This site features English and Chinese versions of reports, speeches, and other information. The science and technology staff has produced rich summaries of conferences and studies done in China. Among these are reports on population trends, environmental protection, genetic research, and Chinese students abroad. The site also has economic, commercial, agricultural, and consular sections.

Taiwan Documents Project

U.S.S. Vandegrift's 1998 Shanghai Port Visit

The site offers photos of the December 4-8, 1998 visit of the American vessel to China's largest city.

VOA Cantonese and Mandarin Broadcasts

The Voice of America, part of the United States government's United States Information Agency, broadcasts in many languages.
