Established in 1928 in Nanjing, China and now based in Taipei, Taiwan, Academica Sinica is a large and respected center of research and graduate training. The bilingual AS website offers a wide array of information about the institution as well as access to the large AS databases which include dynastic histories and more.

Chinese Science
This annual journal began publication in 1975 and since 1993 has been published at UCLA. UCLA history professor Benjamin Elman serves as the editor and is assisted by Richard Gunde. The UCLA Center for Chinese Studies and the UCLA Center for Pacific Rim Studies collaborate in producing the journal. Recent issues are available on-line as are tables of contents from earlier issues.
Features biographies of artists and writers as well as poetry. The poetry pages include Chinese text and sound files.

For Web radio and television
To listen to web radio broadcasts or to watch web television broadcasts, you need a piece of software known as a player. You can download a player without charge from the Real Networks website. Some sites have Quicktime movies available. Download the Quicktime viewer from Apple. Of course, much of the text on these sites is in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Download the NJWin viewer for a free trial to permit you to do this.
China External Trade Development Council (CETRA)
This government and industry sponsored site is bilingual, fast, and relatively easy to use, offering information about specific companies, product lines, and trade regulations. The site also offers a wealth of trade statistics.
Compiled by Michael Turton of the Fooyin Institute of Technology, Taliao, Taiwan, the bibliography looks primarily at small business and political economic history. At present, the alphabetical bookmarks do not work, but the list is quite extensive and could be searched using the find function under "Edit" on your browser menu.

Calendar Conversion Help
Traditionally, Chinese noted the year by the reign title of the emperor and the year of the reign. Beginning with the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, the ROC used the same system with the word republic ("minguo") preceeding the year. This system remains in use in Taiwan. Ming L. Pei's site focuses on Chinese literature and the arts, including pages devoted to calligraphy, poetry, opera, philosophical works and more. It is well-illustrated and easy to use, ranking among the best bilingual sites around.
Chinese language website offers official announcements, plans, executive orders, information on administrative reform, a map showing the location of the EY in Taipei, and a search function. Special sections are devoted to the 921 (Sept. 21, 1999) earthquake recovery program and to breaking news.
This bilingual site offers information about the office's organization, speeches, background on the president and vice-president, and photos of the offices and state visits. A couple of sound clips are available.
Republic of China Government Information Office
This Chinese language site offers information on the electoral reforms that have occured in Taiwan since 1986-87 which include the transition to a popularly elected president. Information about upcoming elections is also available.
Ministry of Economic Affairs (English)
A fast, well-organized site with many graphs to illustrate points about economic development and trade.
Industrial Development Bureau (English)
Ministry of Education (Chinese only)
Poorly structured, this site does offer information on educational policy and enrollments as well as links to many of Taiwan's elementary and secondary schools and colleges.
Introduction to the ministry, information on business in Taiwan, and statistics. Included under measures of economic development are statistics on tariff rate reductions and tax reductions.

Bilingual site with policy statements, speeches, a yearbook, and more.
Ministry of National Defense (Chinese only)
Announcements from the minister, organization of the military, personnel data, service objectives and more are available.
Classical Chinese Historiography
Compiled by UCLA history professor Ben Elman to aid in the training of graduate students, this is a rich collection of annotated lists of research aids. Features exercises designed to expose students to a wide variety of essential reference tools. Highly recommended.

In Big-5 code, the dictionary shows the creation of over 4000 characters from about 200 simple ideographs and pictographs. A printed edition was published in August 1996. This site does not require special software and allows newcomers to the language a quick look at how Chinese characters are constructed. Highly recommended for newcomers to the language or for browsers.
Chinese language teaching/study
This is a much improved site. It now includes links to a variety of study aids, including sites where sound files may be downloaded. A list of shortwave sources of news in Chinese is also provided.
An operation named Ocrat has created a website which uses VOA Mandarin broadcasts as part of a language teaching program. It is not affiliated with the VOA, but is well worth a visit. The Ocrat home page offers a variety of other resources, including animated character instruction.
Includes a rich set of links. Xie Tianwen's site is particularly interesting.

The Shijing (Book of Odes), one of the earliest of the Chinese classics. The Chinese texts and James Legge's English translations are provided.
It takes a couple of steps to retrieve each map from this government website, but they are colorful and useful. Click on shopping maps to see Taipei. Unfortunately, no complete island map is included.

This museum is known as having the world's finest collection of Chinese art. The website (with pages in Chinese and in English) offers photos of many objects, details about current exhibitions, including those of contemporary artists, and more.

You may download a variety of music files from this site. The selection includes Beijing Opera and Teresa Teng's pop hits.
Broadcasting Corporation of China (English)
An official arm of the government of Taiwan, the BCC website offers several channels of live audio and a couple of "on demand" services as well. The BCC broadcasts "the voice of free China" in English via shortwave, but not via the web.

China News Digest
Copyright worries and time have lessened this source of information about China, but it remains a useful digest of news concerning China. The all volunteer crew at CND also publishes digests aimed primarily at Chinese living in particular places (e.g. North America) and maintains an excellent website. You can look into the CND archives and visit virtual exhibits. Coverage of Taiwan has improved in recent years, though remains weak compared to the coverage of the mainland.
China Television Service (CTS)
Chinese news and entertainment source, with several video clips available upon demand. Includes a vibrant English language teaching and "World Family" sections (free registration required). Be sure to visit the "Chinese television history" portion of the site.

Inside China Today
This is a remarkable compendium of news and photos culled from Chinese and foreign reports. It is updated daily. This site also provides a great deal of background information about governmental structure (for China and for Taiwan), religion, education, and more. Highly useful.
Fast, well-organized, and not requiring any special software, Sina.com has a wealth of news and other resources available in Chinese.
This site's news links page offers access to a wide variety of news sources in Chinese and English.
A well-constructed English language daily that includes Chinese characters for the names of individuals and organizations. Back issues (from August 1999) are available at the site which offers an AltaVista-like search engine.
This is a fast and well-organized Chinese language news service. Stories are rendered as graphics, so special software is not required.
